Breast Augmentation Introduction

Breast size is very important to many women. Unfortunately, genetics, pregnancy, breast-feeding, and weight loss can all play a part in the size and shape of our breasts. Some people feel that small breasts contribute to a distorted body image or low self-esteem and wish to increase the size of their breasts or fullness of their breasts in order to achieve better balance and symmetry, thus improving self-confidence. If you're in the Greater Boston Area, Dr. Richard Montilla at Montilla Plastic Surgery performs some of the best results in a breast augmentation Boston has to offer.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase the size of the breasts or improve symmetry of the breasts, by inserting an implant either under the breast tissue or the muscle wall. Breast implants may be either saline or silicone. Breast augmentation is an outpatient surgery that takes place in a hospital setting under general anesthesia and takes about 1 hour. The incision line is usually at the base of the breast, making it inconspicuous and easily covered by the natural weight of the breast.

Are You a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

Barring any pre-existing medical condition, most women who are unhappy with their breast size are candidates for our breast augmentation in Worcester. We cannot conclusively state that through a website, so your next step is a consultation with Dr. Richard Montilla in his Greater Boston Area or Worcester offices. Rest assured, breast augmentation is a safe procedure for most women. In general, you must be a non-smoker, in good general health, and free from any other medical condition that could adversely affect your surgery.

What Conditions Can be Corrected by a Breast Augmentation

How Much Does Breast Augmentation Cost?

While the average national cost of breast augmentation is about $6,750, this number can vary greatly based upon your surgeon. During your consultation, Dr. Montilla will determine your exact needs and provide a quote based upon that. It is important to remember that you will be living with the results of breast augmentation for many years, so it may not behoove you to simply find the cheapest surgeon. Dr. Montilla is known for performing arguably the best breast augmentation Boston has to offer with his detail-oriented, thorough approach with a high rate of patient satisfaction.

Breast Implant Options

During a breast implant procedure, Dr. Montilla places saline or silicone implants under or over the pectoral muscle through incisions placed to minimize visible scarring.

Implant Types

The most popular and most famous of the implant types, silicone represents the gold standard in breast implants. Over the years, these devices have been developed to the point where they are far superior to those of the past. They are FDA approved and extremely safe, as well as available in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Saline implants have an outer silicone shell and are filled with saline solution. This offers the advantage of inserting a deflated implant, which takes less of a toll on the tissues. There is also the opportunity for size adjustment after the surgery.

Gummy Bear

One of the latest developments in breast implants, gummy bear implants are described by their namesake—filled with a thick silicone shell, they have a similar consistency to the popular candy. Additionally, gummy bear implants are teardrop-shaped, helping to accurately mimic the shape of a natural breast.

Breast Implant Size

In order to cater to a broad variety of patients, breast implants come in many sizes. They are measured in cubic centimeters rather than cup size. As such, your current breast size has much to do with the size of your breast implants. During your consultation with Dr. Montilla, the two of you will determine the ideal size for you.

Breast Implant Shape

Most breast implants are perfectly round when viewed from the front, and elliptical when viewed from the side. During recent years, many breast implant manufacturers have also developed ana

Types of Incisions

Depending on your unique anatomy and personal preference and the type and size of implant, the incisions will be placed around the edge of the areola, in the fold under the breast, or, more rarely, in the armpit. Your incision will primarily depend upon your chosen implant, as well as your natural anatomy.

Breast Implant Location

As with size and incision, your breast implant location will depend upon your unique circumstances. The implant may be placed above the pectoral muscle, below the pectoral muscle, or a combination of the two (dual plane). The goal is to produce the most natural appearance possible, and Dr. Montilla will make his recommendation on that basis. He will ensure you are informed and in agreement before moving forward with surgery.

Most patients take about 1 weeks off of work, although you should be able to return to most normal, non-vigorous activities immediately. You will be prescribed pain medication and muscle relaxants to help ease your discomfort. Heavy lifting is limited, as are vigorous workouts for the first few weeks.

Breast Augmentation Risks

As with any surgery, there are risks during breast augmentation. Dr. Montilla performs all surgery under strict safety protocol, and has a very good record of avoiding complications. Risks from breast augmentation include anesthesia reactions, bleeding, infection, and hematoma. During your search for a breast augmentation surgeon, it is imperative you search only for a board-certified plastic surgeon, like Dr. Montilla, to ensure you are in good hands.

What to Expect During Breast Augmentation

How soon can I wear a bra?

After about six weeks, you will transition from your compression garment to a standard bra. Prior to that time, the underwire of standard bras can affect the healing process.

Will I be Able to Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?

In most cases, breast augmentation will not affect your breast glands. During your consultation with Dr. Montilla, be sure to communicate this particular concern.

How Soon After Breast Augmentation Can I Have Sex?

You will generally need to wait several weeks before you have sex. At that point, you can have sex in a gentle fashion until the tissues are fully healed.

Does Breast Augmentation Affect Mammograms?

Women with a breast augmentation can still of course receive mammograms, but they will be done in a slightly different fashion. Make sure you inform your doctor that you have undergone breast augmentation.

Why Are Implants Placed Under the Pectoral Muscle?

Depending upon your anatomy, an implant placed under the pectoral muscle may produce a more natural result. As an example, women who have small natural breasts may simply not have enough tissue to place the implant above the muscle.

Can I Enhance My Breasts Without Surgery?

Unfortunately, there is no lasting solution to breast augmentation without surgery. The most effective procedures are breast augmentation with implants, or breast augmentation with natural fat transfer.
